Terrarium Cake March 05 2012, 5 Comments
I can't contain my excitement about this cake, how totally fun it is! I myself don't own a terrarium because I cannot be trusted to keep any plant alive, but I think terrariums are so cool. I've noticed how popular they are recently, so when we got these chocolate crunchies in I knew a terrarium cake must be made!
I filled my terrarium jar with chocolate cake batter about 1 inch deep, set the whole jar on a cookie sheet, and baked. I was a little nervous about baking in something not labeled for baking, but it worked beautifully! Please bake at your own risk though.
After cooling I poured in some chocolate crunchies, enough to resemble a nice layer of top soil. I then tinted decorator frosting with a 50/50 mix of leaf green and forest green gel paste coloring and filled my frosting bag fitted with a round cupcake frosting tip. I generously pipped in blobs and swirls of frosting and sprinkled with green non-pareils for a mossy feel.
Then I tucked in some candy rocks here and there and topped with 2 totally cute chocolate mushroom lollipops. Learn to make the mushrooms here.
I just love how this cake turned out and how really very simple it was to put together. I love projects like that!

Blueberry Smoothie March 02 2012, 0 Comments
A morning smoothie with a fun paper straw is a staple in our house. My go to favorite is 1 banana, frozen blueberries, vanilla yogurt, and milk because its yummy and we always have these things on hand. I don't know about you, but I am not a morning person. Little things like fun straws in colorful smoothies seem to make mornings so much more enjoyable!
We carry 30 different colors and patterns of paper straws in packages of 24, or bulk packages of 100 for parties and events. We also carry assorted packages if you want to try them all!
Chocolate Mushroom Lollipops February 28 2012, 1 Comment
I've been dying to try this 3D mushroom mold and now I'm so glad I did! They're a little happiness on a stick. I love how the mushrooms have such a mod feel to them when made in pretty bright colors and topped with a little royal icing flower.
Here they are without sticks, just as cute!
I filled some of the cavities to the top, and others not quite, to create mushrooms of varying heights. After letting the chocolate set for just a minute or two it was firm enough that I could just push the sticks right in and they stayed upright all by themselves. Then into the freezer they went.
After about 10 minutes in the freezer, this depends on how warm your chocolate was, they popped right out. I'm very pleased with how shiny they are!
I let the mushroom parts come to room temperature, then attached them together with a little melted chocolate and propped up on the edge of a cookie sheet to set. Top with a little royal icing flower using a dab of melted chocolate if desired. For more detailed chocolate molding tips check out our Basic Chocolate Molding Tutorial.
Bakers Twine Dispenser February 23 2012, 1 Comment
I recently thrifted a charming vintage sugar shaker for my morning coffee. I had problems with the sugar clogging though, so I repurposed it as a bakers twine dispenser. It works perfectly and looks adorable! I'm working on building my collection of sugar shakers now.. only 12 more to go! Make that 16, our supplier just got in 4 new colors.. coming to the shop soon!
Chocolate Mustache Lollipops February 13 2012, 2 Comments
We make chocolate mustache lollipops often around here. They are just so fun that we never tire of them! They always seem to encourage giggles and silly mustached photos..
Today we made pink strawberry and dark chocolate mustache lollipops to share with our friends for Valentine's Day!
This is an easy peasy project that you can do with kiddos in an afternoon! Follow our Basic Chocolate Molding Tutorial if you're new to chocolate molding.
Tips: Roll the lollipop stick once in the mold to coat the whole top of the stick with chocolate, this makes the stick more secure. Get yourself more than one mold if you plan to make a lot, waiting for the chocolate to harden can become time consuming.
Sugarlicious February 08 2012, 2 Comments
This week was the release date of the much anticipated edible art book Sugarlicious by bakers everywhere. I preordered my copy and when it arrived bright and early yesterday morning I snuggled in with some coffee and Sugarlicious and read it cover to cover. The projects were just lovely, the kind that make you smile instantly, and its organized so well! I was nearing the end when I turned to page 203 and what before my sparkling eyes did appear..
Thats right my friends.. layercakeshop.com listed in the resources section of the book! What a surprise!
Check out just a few of my favorites..
Made you smile didn't they?! Order yourself a copy of Sugarlicious and make sure to check out Meaghan's blog The Decorated Cookie for tons of baking inspiration! Thanks Meaghan!

Gingerbread Feather Cookies November 16 2011, 0 Comments
Thanksgiving is just around the corner and I've got a few feather themed projects lined up for you this week that will add something extra special to your Thanksgiving table. First up are these festive gingerbread feather cookies.
I hand cut these cookies using a feather cut from card stock as my template. Hand cutting did take a little extra time so I recommend cutting and baking your feather cookies ahead of time if you are making a lot of them.
After rolling and cutting press a lollipop stick into the back of the cookie and press on a little extra dough to secure the stick. Turn back over and bake cookies on a parchment lined cookie sheet.
Once cooled you are ready to decorate! I used orange and blue candy melts, and orange and teal jimmies. Melt your candy melts in the microwave 20 seconds at a time and once melted pour into a disposable decorating bag. Pipe stripes of candy melt onto your cookies and coat with jimmies. Let one color set before you move onto the next.
I've created a printable PDF for you that includes templates for all 4 feather themed projects created to help you celebrate this Thanksgiving. Download here: FeatherTemplate
My little helper happily got in on the action! She is the cutest!
Maple Cinnamon Pumpkin Seeds November 03 2011, 0 Comments
This is what I did with our pumpkin seeds this year.. really delicious! Every year I'm the only one who eats them so I was looking for a way to jazz them up. Maple syrup and cinnamon did the trick.
I packaged them up in Glassine Bakery Bags and sealed them with Maple Bakery Labels to share them with a few lucky family members.
2 cups pumpkin seeds (washed and patted dry)
2 tb maple syrup
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp sea salt
Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray. Mix all ingredients together and spread into a single layer on the cookie sheet. Bake for 40 minutes. Let cool completely on the baking sheet before storing or packaging. Some parts will be a bit gooey, others will be crunchy. Yum!
Gingerbread Deer & Coffee November 02 2011, 1 Comment
Hope you all had a happy Halloween! I have a fun month of autumn baking and entertaining ideas lined up for you, and the cutest Thanksgiving DIY's that I'm so excited about! They will make your Thanksgiving table so very special!
Starting off this month of November are these yummy gingerbread deer that pair fabulously with a fresh cup of hot coffee. A little bit campy, a little bit rustic.. they make me happy!
They don't require any decorating which makes them a breeze to whip up using the Layer Cake Shop Standing Deer Cutter. Just mix up a batch of your favorite gingerbread, roll, cut, bake, dunk and nibble. Yum.
They are the perfect autumn afternoon treat. Enjoy!
Gingerbread Acorn Cookie Friends October 24 2011, 0 Comments
This week was our week to bring a snack to Olive's preschool. The theme was Fall Fun, so we thought some Acorn Cookie Friends would be perfect. We served the cookies along with applesauce and milk.. they were a hit!
Olive cut out the the acorns, dipped them in chocolate, and also added the eyes. She was very proud, and we loved how different and silly they all looked!
To make your own Acorn Cookie Friends follow our tutorial found HERE. We used our favorite gingerbread recipe instead of chocolate cookie dough, they are both delicious.

Good News! October 18 2011, 2 Comments
Our shop has some belated news to share! Over the summer Layer Cake Shop has changed from a partnership to a family run business. I miss my bff/partner so very much, but making the decision to move our family from Illinois to Wisconsin this summer just didn't make our partnership practical any longer. Josh and I, along with our fantastic employees, now operate Layer Cake Shop full time together. Working together as a family on our business is the very best, and what we have always wanted! A huge thank you to all our fantastic customers who have helped make this dream of ours possible!
This summer I have also been working on growing a baby! That's the baby belly up there at the top. We are all crazy excited to meet this little one, but big sister Olive can hardly contain her excitement! We are planning on a late November arrival, but Olive was quite early, so it could happen any day now. Eek.. yay!
When I first launched the Daily Mixer I intended for it to be filled with baking inspiration, created in house, and a way to share shop news. However, our big move and this pregnancy has made it challenging to create as many baking inspiration projects as I would have liked. Knowing that there will soon be a newborn to snuggle a whole lot, I know for certain there will be less time to bake for a while!
Part of my Layer Cake Shop vision has always been to create original content for the sole purpose of inspiring people. I love, love, love to share ideas and inspire others to create. So if it can't be all about baking for right now, I thought I'd transform this blog a bit to include all the other things I love and am working on.. babies, kids, vintage, thrifting, fashion, home, sewing, crafting, and certainly baking. A lifestyle inspiration blog maybe?
Just to be super duper clear, Layer Cake Shop is humming along just peachy and will continue to do so after baby is here. You can continue to expect the best products and service!
Cheers to changes!

♥ NEW ♥ Push Pop Containers June 30 2011, 5 Comments
Sorry we have been away so long.. more on that later. We are in LOVE with our new Push Pop Containers! Our first batch flew off the shelves, but have no fear, there are more on the way! You can fill them with so many different yummy things.. cake, brownies, cookies, candy, pudding, ice cream, and more. Layers of goodies between frosting looks so pretty! They even come with a lid!
I made the above cake push pops by punching rounds of cake, from a sheet cake, using a circle cutter from our Round Circle Cutter Set. I then layered yummy frosting between the cake and topped with sprinkles. That easy!
Olive and I also made a few by layering frosting and mini cupcakes..
Um.. yes.. they were a hit!
We also carry them in mini size!
Our Mini Push Pop Containers are perfect for really rich treats because they only hold a few bites. Somebody has got to make some fudge push pops stat!

Indie Wed Recap February 02 2011, 1 Comment
We had a booth at Indie Wed this last Saturday and we had so much fun!
Our fantastic employee Devin helped us out. Seriously people.. the guy is willing to wear a pink tie in public for us!
Doesn't our booth look like a parade float!? We got a lucky spot.. the first booth right in front.
Devin workin' the crowd.
We couldn't bring one of everything, but we really packed a whole lot in.
We met so many wonderful new friends who love to bake.
Its always really fun to meet customers that have ordered from our website in the past.
We had a great time, handed out a ton of business cards, and hope to attend again next year!
We had to shamelessly include this photo of Olive (Greta's baby) who came to visit us at the show. She found herself a lollipop.
Snow Storm! February 01 2011, 2 Comments
Kristen is from California, and admittedly afraid of this snow storm we are in right now. I however am from Wisconsin and snow doesn't scare me! I am not one to stock up on groceries and hunker down, I always seem to find a way to go about my days in the midst of snowy weather.. until today!
Olive and I had to leave the shop early today for fear that we wouldn't be able to make it home safely if we waited an longer. I think I made the right choice. I'm at home looking out the window at snow flying horizontally, and the wind whistling through the windows. Its CRAZY outside!
Kristen will be shipping on her own, without the help of the rest of the Layer Cake Shop team, for the next couple days. If you've placed an order this week, hang in there, we are doing everything we can to get it to you as soon as humanly possible amidst this insane weather.
This is the perfect time to stay at home and bake your little heart out.. I think that's what I'll be doing!

I ♥ Macarons January 20 2011, 3 Comments
Have you ever made macarons? I had never actually eaten a single one, but bought a macaron book a while ago intending to try them out. Then, I think I got a bit intimidated. I was starting to get the impression that there is some science behind making macarons and if you don't follow the directions exactly, they don't work. And if you do follow the directions exactly they still might not work.
My mother-in-law is creating an Amy Atlas inspired dessert table for an upcoming baby shower, and we thought macarons would be perfect. Our first batch worked! There is a little "foot" and everything!
We used this book..
I don't feel like I've really dived into this book, so I hesitate to recommend it, but I love how its organized. Macarons are just so pretty! I want to make them in every color.
a BIG thanks! January 08 2011, 1 Comment

Layer Cake Shop in Country Living Magazine! January 02 2011, 22 Comments
What a way to ring in the new year.. we have been featured in Country Living Magazine!
The issue just hit the newstands and we are overjoyed with how it turned out. We vote this the hardest secret to keep in 2010 and the very best thing of 2011.. so far!
The article, Making a Country Living, is a regular article that features a different female owned business each month. Its right in the front on page 20!
They photographed a TON of different products, and ended up choosing our Small Deer Toppers and Retro Baby Animals. We had no way of knowing what they would feature, which made it a bit hard to stock up on these little guys. We sold out of them really quick, but no worries, they are on order and will be here asap! Make sure to sign up to be notified when they are back in stock if you are waiting for them.
Country Living contacted us at the end of September and we only had a few weeks to prepare. I (greta) looked at about 300 dresses online to find just the right one. I found this one from Anthropologie with the help of my BFF.. thanks Sara! Then I was on the hunt for the perfect cardigan. I spent many hours cardigan shopping! Kristen has an amazing collection of vintage clothes and already had that perfect little red puffed sleeve number..LOVE it!
There was hair dying to be done, hair cuts, raiding of the makeup drawers, curtains to be made, some touch up painting on the walls, oh and what to put on the bulletin board. It was fun, and when your aiming for perfect it gets a little crazy! There was a whole lot of laughing at the insanity of it all!
We were photographed by the awesome Aimee Herring, she was so much fun to work with!
Here is the cover! Thanks Country Living!
It was a great experience and we are amazed at how our shop has grown from its tiny beginnings in just 2-1/2 years. We couldn't have done it without all of you, our incredible customers! We have received some of the sweetest emails from County Living readers, and a lot of questions. We hope to do a little business related FAQ in the future to help answer some of them. If you have any questions that you would like to add feel free to put them in the comments on this post, or email us.
Christmas Bark December 27 2010, 0 Comments
This year I tired something new for the holidays.. Candy Bark. I was looking for something that Olive and I could do together. Bark was the perfect project. I spread the melted chocolate and she sprinkled. We had a blast.
We made candy cane bark, which was my absolute favorite.
orange apricot bark..
and peanut butter bark.
They were all really yummy and a fun gift to give!
To make bark melt your Milk Chocolate Candy Melts just until melted, about 1 min, and spread on parchment paper. Let cool. Then mix your White Candy Melts with your PB chips, Red, or Orange Candy Melts.. 1 to 1 ratio. Melt, add a couple drops of your flavoring oil, and spread over your milk chocolate. Immediately sprinkle with your chopped candy or fruit. Let cool. Break up into pieces.
So easy, yummy and makes for a pretty gift any time of the year!
